Mandrake
The Mandrake root is hallucinogenic and narcotic. In sufficient quantities, it induces a state of unconsciousness and was used as an anaesthetic for surgery in ancient times. In one superstition, people who pull up this root will be condemned to hell, and the mandrake root would scream as it was pulled from the ground, killing anyone who heard it.

Atropa
Atropa belladonna, or "deadly nightshade," has been used as medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Its toxic foliage and berries contain tropane alkaloids like atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine, causing delirium and hallucinations. Early humans used it for poisonous arrows, and belladonna drops were used to dilate women's pupils.

Bittersweet
Solanum dulcamara has been valued by herbalists since ancient Greek times. In the Middle Ages the plant was thought to be effective against witchcraft, and was sometimes hung around the neck of cattle to protect them from the "evil eye". It has been suggested that the plant was used both medicinally and to induce altered states of mind.

Digitalis
Due to the cardiac glycoside digitoxin, the leaves, flowers, and seeds of this plant are poisonous and potentially fatal if ingested. Digitoxin, extracted from the leaves, is used to treat heart failure. Digitalis plants are also known as "dead man's bells" and "witch's gloves," with toxins absorbable via skin or ingestion.

Bilze
Historically, henbane was used in combination with other plants, such as the mandrake, the deadly nightshade, and the datura, as an anaesthetic potion, and for its psychoactive properties in "magic brews". Dioscorides recommended it as a sedative and analgesic. The plant, recorded as Herba Apollinaris, was used to yield oracles by the priestesses of Apollo.

Comfrey
Over centuries, comfrey was cultivated in Asia, Europe, and the UK as a vegetable and herbal medicine. Its early names, knitbone or boneset, reflect its historical use to treat sprains, bruises, or fractures. The roots could be mashed and packed around a broken limb to form a hardened 'plaster cast' when dried.

Datura

Nerium oleander has been cultivated for millennia, particularly by ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Pliny and Dioscorides noted it as an antidote for snake bites when mixed with rue. In Ancient Greece, oleander induced hallucinations in the Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi. Oleander was a very popular ornamental shrub in Roman peristyle gardens.
